ENGLISH NAME: Elephant grub DESCRIPTION: The Elephant Grub is the biggest caterpillar. The Elephant grub is recognised by silver side stripes and a pair of huge eyes which are used to frighten predators. By retracting it's head, the eye spots located on the neck ride forward and swell in size. Food plant/hostplant:The Elephant grub is found on the tar vine in the long grass. TRADITIONAL USES: When the Arrernte people picked the tar vine the caterpillars fall off. The Arrernte people squeezed the caterpillar guts and then cooked it the hot soil. They then left it for 3 to 4 days. LIFE CYCLES: The moth lays eggs on the tar vine leaf. When the eggs hatch they turn into caterpillars. Caterpillars eat lots of food for 10 to 12 days. Then they makes an underground chamber for 10 to 12 days. The cocoon becomes a hawk moth and mates to lay eggs because they only lives for 2 to 4 weeks as a moth. |
