ARRENTE NAME: Tyape Ntyarlke DESCRIPTION:The elephant grub is much bigger than the ayepe-arenye caterpillar and has huge eyes to scare the enemy. It is also recognised by stripes of silver on it's sides. FOOD PLANT/HOST PLANTS: The elephant grub is found in the tarvine and on long grass on the high grounds near creeks. Tarvine is one of Ntyarlke major food source. Sometimes they eat portulaca. Now they also feed on exotic plants such as Ruby Dock, Morning Glory and grape vine. TRADITIONAL USES: The elephant grub is cooked and eaten the same way as the ayep-arenye caterpillar. The indigionous people squeezed out the guts through a little hole then cooked them in hot soil. They left them for two or three days to dry in the sun before eating. LIFE CYCLES: The hawk moth lays eggs on the leaf of a Tar vine and soon hatches an elephant grub. Then it begins to eat the tar vine for about 10 to 12 days. Soon after the caterpillar has eaten and become huge it creates an under ground chamber. After 12 to 24 days it evolves into a hawk moth then mates and survives as long as 1 to 2 weeks. |
